With a BSc degree in marketing, obtained from the University of Ghana Business School under her belt, coupled with her love for fashion, Velma embarked on her quest to be a world renowned Milliner, Bag and Jewelry Designer. Velma’s expertise was inspired by her mother Sarah Crossland; who encouraged her to go after her passion, and honed by her enrollment into the Central St. Martins School of Arts and Designs, an affiliation of London School of Fashion, where she studied Millinery, Bag designing and Communication. These milestones marked the genesis of the Velma Millinery and Accessory brand.

The fashion story of Velma Millinery and Accessories Brand is a laudable one! From humble beginnings of providing complementary hairpieces for Ophelia Crossland Designs, Velma Millinery and Accessories now boast of a prolific rolodex of fashion collections to boot. Fast Forward to recent times, the Velma’s Millinery and Accessories has made considerable inroads to becoming the accessory brand of choice with eclectic millinery styles and accessories to die for! Today classy, elegant, versatile accessory pieces are synonymous to the Velma brand and its prolific product offerings.

The brand’s style aesthetic has matured over the years and continues to remain relevant in this dynamic fashion industry by incorporating style with modern technic, exciting materials and pieces. Under the fashion clutch line, the Ankara Collection marks the brand’s premiere clutch collection; which gave women the option to accessorize culture -the use of bold intricate Ankara fabrics was used to complement modern styles. This took the African market by storm. Soon after came the Royal Collection and this paid homage to the regal appeal of Ghanaian culture. It included masterpieces made from Kente silk pieces, jute and leather. Other collections included the Metallic Collection and the Semi-precious stone collection “ both influenced by the exquisite appeal of real stones and pearls. Some recent collections include the Fibre collection, Antique collection, Golden Tress collection “ just to mention a few.

Some of the collections under the millinery stream of work include the Birthday collection, Classic & Sophisticated Collections,SS17 “Floral Accents and Bows just to mention a few. The SS18 “ Velma’s Garden is yet another collection under the works to be launched soon.

In order to keep her clientele engaged, Velma ensures the infusion of innovative pieces and modern fashion trends into her work but more importantly, the underlying theme in all Velma’s fashion accessory collections is the unique handmade one-of-a-kind appeal that keeps her audience intrigued. Velma’s work remains true to her philosophy that every woman deserves to stand on her own and be unique!

In an effort to perfect her craft, in 2016 Velma participated in a workshop organized by Swarovski West-Africa. Not only did this afford her the opportunity to work with a formidable brand in sourcing the crystals and jewelry for her designs but also six months after the workshop, Velma collaborated with her sister – fashion designer and owner of the Ophelia Crossland brand and brand ambassador for Swarovski West-Africa “ on the fashion showcase runway for Swarovski at the Glitz African Fashion Show. A proud moment for both brands and the Crossland family! This triad collaboration made an encore presentation in 2017 at the Swarovski Sparkling Contour in Dubai where Velma showcased an elaborate high fashion headpiece made from Swarovski crystals to accessorize an Ophelia Crossland ensemble.

Velma’s clientele Rolodexx spans women of all walks of life, all over the globe. Her brand print has permeated the fashion scenes of Ghana and other neighboring African countries including Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya etc. The brand also has patronage from clients in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia. A pivotal moment for the brand was when the current second lady of the Republic Ghana, Her Excellency Mrs. Samira Bawumia complemented her style with a clutch from the brand’s Queen Clutch design during the Ghana @60 Independence celebration parade in 2017. This further catapulted the brand into an exclusive fashion base! Â The First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Mrs. Rebecca Akuffo Addo is also an avid patron of the brand. Other noteworthy celebrity patrons include Anita Erskine, Zynell Zuh, Jackie Appiah, Joselyn Dumas and Senator Florence ita Giwa fashion icon for Nigeria.

In 2018, the brand is being positioned as a fashion force to reckon with as Velma further deepens the brands reach by partaking in more fashion Collaborations and strengthen the brands presence on the international fashion scene. Velma worked with renowned fellow fashion designer Christie Brown by designing statement headpieces for Christie Brown’s SS18Collection Conscience in Accra Ghana at the Kempinski Hotel. Velma has been selected as one of the milliners worldwide to showcase two strong headpieces at the Great hat exhibition 2018 organized by Xterrace fashion platform London (2018) for London Hat week. The brand has been featured in numerous magazines, publications including Hat Academy, Dream Wedding Magazine 2017, Daily Guide Africa, Hbeonlinemag, Agoo Magazine, Pleasures magazine, London runway Magazine Issue 12
